The Global Land Project (GLP) is seeking applications for the position of Executive Officer of its International Project Office (IPO), which will be hosted by the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) of the University of Bern, Switzerland (beginning in 2016). GLP is a core project of the Future Earth initiative (www.futureearth.org). It constitutes the largest research network in land system science, a field of research dealing with the causes, consequences, and integrated simulation of land systems. GLP organizes conferences, workshops, and publication activities to facilitate collaboration between community members. Collaborative efforts are aimed at synthesizing current knowledge of land systems and land system change, identifying emerging challenges and solutions for sustainable development, and interacting with development, policy, and civil society stakeholders to co?design research. CDE is seeking an: Executive Officer for the International Project Office (IPO) of the Global Land Project (GLP) DUTIES: The Executive Officer will run the GLP International Project Office (IPO) in Bern, Switzerland, taking over from the team running the current IPO at INPE in Brazil. Tasks andresponsibilities include: ? Coordinating the project and its national and international affairs on a daily basis, with due consideration of decisions made by the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and of the formal framework provided by the University of Bern as the GLP IPO’s host institution. ? Coordinating and guiding a small team of scientific collaborators and support staff. ? Developing and implementing a communication strategy (including a website, newsletter, etc.) and serving as the point of contact for the GLP community, which consists of over 2,000 registered scientists around the world. ? Developing an outreach strategy and guiding the establishment of a science–policy dialogue with dedicated development partners from multilateral and bilateral agencies as well as Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). ? Communicating regularly with all GLP bodies, including the SSC, the Engagement Committee (EC, to be established), the EC Co?Chairs, and the GLP nodal offices in Asia (China, Taiwan, Japan), Africa, Europe (Germany, Cyprus), and Latin America. ? Initiating and organizing international meetings to implement GLP science plan activities, including GLP Open Science Meetings as well as regional meetings of the GLP nodal offices. ? Writing and submitting grant applications to raise funds for continued operation and expansion of the project. ? Preparing annual reports to funders and co?sponsors. ? Further establishing GLP and the land system science community as active contributors to Future Earth and its principles of co?designing research and co?producing knowledge to address and resolve challenges of global change. ? Providing guidance in establishing meaningful support structures, strategic partnerships, and networks for the project as a whole, including assistance and advice in regional nodal office affairs. ? Contributing to scientific synthesis activities, including scientific papers, editing of journal special issues, books, participating in meetings, and more. REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate will: ? Have a PhD degree or equivalent? Be highly experienced in international research collaboration, leadership and coordination of research programmes, and management of small teams ? Have a substantive research record in land system science and its application to sustainability research ? Have experience in interdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration ? Have experience working in a multi?stakeholder setting, particularly at the science–development– policy interface ? Have experience and interest in scientific and science–policy communication ? Be familiar with international global change organizations, including Future Earth ? Be fluent in written and spoken English ?
